A Not-So-Indie Bundle

Hey friends, Pike here.  Long time, no post… from me, anyway.  I do apologize, but writing… and of course lots of gaming… have been keeping me quite busy.

Anyhow!  Today I come bearing news that you may have already heard.  Basically, there’s a new Humble Bundle in town, and it’s a little different.  It breaks away from Humble Bundle tradition in more than one way: The games are certainly not “indie” ones, for starters, oh, and Steam and Windows are both required.

A few people are questioning the wisdom of this move.  People don’t like taking the focus away from indie games, and Mac and Linux users are certainly not impressed, either, since Humble Bundle has traditionally prided itself on offering games to users of all “major” operating systems.

As for myself, well, I see little to complain about.  It’s still cheap games, money is still going to charity (heck, you can give it all to charity if you want), and honestly with THQ in the financial trouble it is currently in, they may as well be their own charity case.

As a self-professed Linux fan the lack of Linux support does bother me a little, but ultimately if you are a Linux gamer you should probably have accepted a while ago that there are a good many games you’re going to be missing out on.  I’m not saying that this is right, necessarily, but I am saying that this is reality.  We’re getting a big ol’ bone tossed to us in the name of impending Steam support, and honestly that’s got me happy enough.  In the meantime I’m willing to dual boot in the name of vidya gaems.

So anyway, do give it a look if you haven’t already.  It’s a solid lineup and worth getting for Company of Heroes alone, not to mention the other games.

Happy Thanksgiving!

I’m sure all our American readers are too busy eating and being incredibly full to be able to make the effort to read right now, but we at The Android’s Closet just wanted to wish you all a happy Thanksgiving! Here are some of the things I’m thankful for:

I’m thankful for having millions of zombies to kill with a variety of creative weapons.

I’m thankful for an abundance of Paradox map painting Asperger’s simulators and the believable worlds that ensue.

Vive la Quebec libre!

I’m thankful for those rare games with a great story.

Clementine will remember this.

I’m thankful for all the years of older vidya we can always go back to and play through one more time.

So won’t you come and play with me, here among the teeming mass of humanity? The universe has spared us this moment.

And I’m thankful for having a wonderful girlfriend in the form of Pike to share all this videogaming goodness with, and to blog with, and to derp around with.

And you.

Vidya season and Mr. Adequate is mad

It’s that time of year, when the dearth of summertime videogames leaves us behind and we begin to be swamped by an increasingly heavy deluge of videogame releases over the months running up to Christmas. Mists of Pandaria, TL2, and Resi 6 just came out, soon arriving is XCOM, then there’s AssCreed III, Dishonored, Farming Simulator 2013, Halo 4, Hitman: Absolution, ZombiU, Company of Heroes 2, and a bunch of other games besides on the way. In short, it’s a busy time for folks like us – please tell us in the comments what you’re looking forward to in the coming weeks and months, and any cunning plans you have to avoid other obligations in favor of the important things, i.e. playing videogames!

But despite this deluge of delectable distractions I’m not altogether happy. No sir. Let’s take one of the games in the above list, XCOM. Now obviously anyone will be well aware that Pike and myself are tremendous fans of the series, and from what we’ve seen the new tactical game actually has a chance of being a true successor of that series, especially with things like the difficulty modifiers for NG+ runs (In fact a couple of those, such as depleting Elerium stocks, are even more hardcore than the original!) So hooray, I can’t wait until Friday so I can play!

Please mister can I have some videogames please?

Wait, Friday? Well yes, because as you may recall I live not in the glorious United Syndicates of America but in the Union of Britain. And whilst Americans typically see things released on a Tuesday, Brits instead have Fridays. This makes some sense of course; you can grab your new videogame and run home to spend all weekend playing it. In times past it was of little consequence, but the ever-increasing ubiquity of the Internet means that this sort of thing is utterly ridiculous in this day and age.

X-COM is a digitally distributed game. I’m sure there are physical copies, but who buys those for PC games anymore? No, we’ll mostly be getting the Steam version, no doubt – and yet Steam will distribute this game to people in the UK days after those in North America. If you folks can begin to see sense in that, I’d love to hear it, because I sure as hell can’t. The really weird thing is that many companies are learning you can’t get away with that anymore, because the same distribution channels opened to them by the Internet open less savory methods up as well. I want to play X-COM, I really really do, so why am I being made to wait an arbitrary few extra days? Because it seems to me that I’ll be able to get it elsewhere without needing to wait for no reason. I hadn’t intended on turning this into a treatise on piracy, but one of the lessons learned over the years is that perhaps the single biggest thing you can do to prevent piracy is to make your product as absolutely convenient as possible for people to get. The lack of paying money is only one appeal of piracy – getting what you want how and when you want it is also a huge incentive.

So, because of the no reason whatever, British fans of X-COM (A British series, I’d point out) have to wait longer to play it. If all this seems like I’m getting mad about videogames, well – I am!

I am as mad as the grumpiest cat

The Damage Thus Far

So lemme put it this way: I smashed through my entire “Steam Sale” budget by Day Five.  Obviously this hasn’t stopped me from buying anything further, but let’s just say that I’ve spent a rather lot of money so far.

It has occurred to me that I need to buy a Spongebob Wallet.

Of all the stuff I’ve gotten so far, here are some of the ones I’ve been enjoying the most:

The Legend of Grimrock: Fun dungeon crawling oldschool RPG that eschews silly things like maps in favor of you bumbling around lost and attacking giant snails.  All of the charm of old dungeon-crawls from back in the day.

Train Simulator 2012: No, I’m not kidding.  This game is great.  Especially if you’re a sim game grognard who gets excited by the thought of playing a travel game in real-time, so if it takes an hour to go from Point A to Point B in real life, you’d better believe it will take you an hour to do so in game.  With “Simple Controls” activated, this game is in the vein of classics such as Desert Bus, except you can pause and do things like start and stop.  This is more endearing than it sounds and this game easily devoured three hours of my time right after buying it.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic: A game which I haven’t touched since it launched almost a decade ago and I played it on the Xbox.  I’d really forgotten how much fun this game is and what was originally going to be an “I’ll dink around for an hour and feel some nostalgia feels” game has turned into several hours of a legitimate playthrough.  Let’s just hope Carth stops wanting to talk about his feelings at some point.  (He won’t.)

Orcs Must Die!: I’ve actually yet to play this one (the curse of buying so many games at one time), but my dear associate Mister Adequate swears up and down that this game is amazing and fun.  Considering his raucous laughter over Skype whenever he plays it, I’ll take his word for it.

What sorts of gems have you picked up with the sale?

The Steam Store is experiencing some heavy load right now. Please try again later.

If you’ve been living under a rock on Mars with your fingers in your ears you may not be aware of this, but the Steam Summer Sale just went live about an hour ago and everyone is hammering the service so hard it’s difficult to actually see the sales.

There is no relevant picture. Have a guide to rocks.

However, highlights so far:
Legends of Grimrock – 60% off (all signs point to this being a modern classic)
THQ Collection – 84% off (holy shitting jesus von nazareth, Company of Heroes, Dawn of War, Saints Row The Third, etc)
New Vegas – 40% off (holding off in case of a daily or flash deal)
SEGA collection – 89% off (loads and loads of Genesis games, as well as the Total War series)
Deus Ex: Human Revolution – 75% off but only lasting for another five hours as of 1900 British Time GO NOW
Paradox Collection – 75% off
Wargame: European Escalation – 40% off (have heard great things; another one I hope will get a daily)

There are votes on which deals are coming up next, and as well as the daily deals there are “flash deals” that only last a few hours, because Gaben hates us sleeping almost as much as he hates our having money.

Anything you’ve already bought or are hoping to see come down in price?

Roundup time!

Just a quick post with a few miscellaneous gaming items that you folks may be interested in, because Pike and I are busy being sickening!

But not too quick!

First, Crusader Kings 2 was released today. It is, of course, a Paradox game, with all that entails. But this is certainly the best release candidate I’ve ever seen from them, for any game; it runs smoothly on my machine (Not Pike’s old rig though! Pity her, she needs to upgrade!) and the bugs aren’t breaking the thing in half. It does need some polish but most of that is reasonable stuff like adding more events, traits, and so on.

Second, the new version of Dwarf Fortress was just released today as well! Obviously with a game this complex and such a small coding team (i.e. one guy) this is one that is likely to be pretty buggy while he patches it up, but if you’ve been keeping track of the things he has been adding this, like any DF update, is going to be a glorious thing indeed.

Third, we’re getting pretty close to the next release of Project Zomboid as well! They’ve got a countdown running and it’s down to six or so items left, so there should hopefully be a release within the next couple of weeks. They’re not telling us what these items are though so it could be six huge week-long projects, or six tiny tweaks and we’ll have it tomorrow morning! Who knows?

Happy New Year – Part Two!

Welcome to the second day of 2012, friends!

Mister Adequate recently blogged about what he’s looking forward to in games this year. Myself, well– I’ve got too many old games to plow through to start thinking about new ones!

Firstly, I’d like to finish my goal of playing through all the Final Fantasy games, a goal which has been pushed to the side a bit because I keep getting distracted by other things. Fear not, though; I’m nearing the end of Final Fantasy 2 (I think) and then I am going to acquire and play FF3, another FF that I haven’t actually played yet!

Secondly, I would like to put at least a few solid hours into every single game I have on Steam. That’s a lot of games. Over 160, last I checked. And if it’s something you’re all interested in, I think I’m going to chronicle that little adventure on this blog this year. I’ll dedicate one post to every game I have. Sound good?

It’s going to be an exciting year filled with… old games!

Wunderbar!

Onward!

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year from us at The Android’s Closet! Thanks to all our readers and commenters for helping make this such an enjoyable little project for Pike and myself! Here’s to another year of ponies and discussing old strategy games! (We’ll try to branch out a bit, we promise!)

Now, to business – what are you looking forward to in gaming in the year 2012? Here are some of those I’m interested in:

Ubon Ratchathani Dead State. A turn-based zombie apoc RPG? Yes. VERY yes. I know every game and its mother has zombies in it these days, but there’s a big difference between having zombies and actually being a zombie survival game. I may blog about that at some point in fact. Or did I already? I can never remember.

Mass Effect 3. I know it’s probably going to be even less like 1 than 2 was. I know it’s almost certainly going to ignore all the decisions made in 1 and 2. I know they’re going to spend more time writing the romances than the main plot. But I’ve been with this series since the beginning, and damnit, I’m going to see it through to the end!

Something like this, yeah.

Final Fantasy XIII-2. The original was a guilty pleasure. I know it’s not a very good game, and not up to the expected standards of a Final Fantasy. But I had a buttload of fun playing it anyway, so I’m looking forward to more running through linear corridors!

Crusader Kings 2. This is the real meaty one though, a new Paradox game that updates one of their most trolly and looks almost as though it will be playable on release. I’m sure it won’t be, but it’ll hopefully need fewer patches than usual to get into such a state. Incest, bastards, and court intrigue is always a recipe for hilarity though. Also from Pox is the expansion to Victoria 2, A House Divided which focuses on the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-5. Oh no, my mistake. It’s about the US Civil War. They never make games about the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-5.

There should also be a new version of Dwarf Fortress on the way, with all kinds of crazy things like vampires and new NPC cities and improved trade. Very exciting!

There are others, but those are the main new releases for me. What about you all? What has you excited in games in the coming year?

It’s Not Too Late for the Skyrim Party

So Mister Adequate– being not just my co-blogger here at The Android’s Closet, but also my better half– bought me a couple of gifts recently. The idea was that one was my Christmas present and one was my birthday present (my birthday is in a few days.) He also graciously let me open them early!

Well. One of the presents was an Xbox 360 and the other was Skyrim.

Yeah. Best Birthday/Christmas gift EVER.

Anyways! Ever since then I’ve been dumping hours into Skyrim like there’s no tomorrow and it has really exceeded all of my expectations. It’s been a long time since I really got into a new video game in this way. Heck, it’s been a long time since I really got into a console game in this way. I keep finding myself wanting to return to this magical world and experience more of it. Even my beloved strategy games keep getting pushed aside so I can wander around Whiterun.

Fus ro derp?

Anyways, if you’re still sitting on the fence regarding whether or not to get this game for whatever reason, I urge you to look into it. I’ve just scratched the surface and I think this really is deserving of the title of Game of the Year. There’s just so much to do and the game accommodates all sorts of different playstyles, and it’s all beautifully put together.

Besides, I’m a giant fluffy tabby cat with a sword. I cannot stress enough how awesome this is.

Pike trolls, then gets trolled. Also Christmas List!

Let me tell you a tale. A tale of Mister Adequate getting trolled to an extreme degree. Yesterday my dear co-blogger Pike and I were playing a game of Civ IV. We were on Skype while we did this, as usual. On turn four she began giggling, and on asking what happened, she revealed that a tribal hut had just given her the Bronze Working tech. For those not familiar with the game, Bronze Working is one of the more expensive, and most useful, early techs. It opens several units up, reveals a very potent resource, gives a new civic, AND lets you chop down trees. It’s never a tech you don’t want, the only question is how hard to beeline for it. Oh but we’re not done! Fourteen turns after this, she began laughing with downright insane, maniacal glee. She had just randomly been given Iron Working from another hut.

I was rather perturbed by this. But while later, while she was dominating the leaderboard and teching up merrily in her little remote peninsula, she got a message from Julius Caesar: “Pay 500 gold” was the gist of it. She told him where to go. A few turns after this he declared war on her. Still nothing special there, and she didn’t feel threatened because there were three or four civs between Rome and England – Russia, Carthage, Spain, and someone else I can’t recall. Caesar had to go through at least three of these to reach her.

A few turns later his army showed up and burnt down Nottingham. He had not only trekked like 30 tiles across the world, and brought enough units to do the job whilst leaving his home well defended (I should know, I was his immediate neighbor and eyeing him up for invasion, only to turn my eyes on Sumeria instead because all dose defenders), he secured all the right of passage agreements needed to get there.

Pike was upset. I was amused.

But now the season of schadenfreude is behind us and The Season is now most firmly upon us; Good cheer, terrible music, and attempting to cause the stress-related deaths of retail workers all around the world. Christmas!

Christmas is a wonderful time for gamers, because it’s when we get more videogames to play. And this year there are sure some games to play! Here’s my own list, because I missed some stuff over the parts of the year when I had no money!

This would have been me if the economy wasn't wrecked!

http://crochet247.com/tag/free-summer-crochet-pattern/ Halo: Anniversary
Batman: Arkham City
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3

And I’m also asking for a new mouse and a RAM upgrade! I always ask for a RAM upgrade, and nobody ever gets me any RAM. I guess it’s just a Christmas tradition now!

Pike, like me, is also eager to get videogames for Christmas. I know of one she’s getting for sure because it is my gift to her – but of course this must stay a secret for now. ;)

What are your gaming Christmas wishes, dear readers? Anything in particular you’re looking forward to getting? Some hardware you’re after? Do tell!
