Altoholics Anonymous

Hello, my name is Mr. Adequate, and I’ve got a problem.

In any game where you can make characters who are quite varied in nature, well, I’m going to do so. Over and over and over again, and I’m going to abandon existing ones and start anew with a new character, no matter what I have achieved with a previous one or how far through the main plot I am. It’s especially bad in games like Morrowind and Fallout New Vegas; if I combined the time I’ve spent playing the former, I’d probably have a level 9001 living god. But every time I play, I think “Oh hey what if I made an Argonian who wants to join the Legion?” Then I do that, and then I think “Oh wait I totally want to make a Breton monk who uses unarmed, unarmored, alchemy, and restoration to get things done.” and off I go to do that, until I take a notion for something else.

So in actual fact I’ve seen the first half of Morrowind more times than I can remember, and the second half like twice. Oblivion is the same story. So was Fallout 3. New Vegas is somewhat better, perhaps because the writing is so strong and immersion so great that it’s hard even for me to abandon a character. MMOs are the same way; I start, play for awhile, then I want to be a Mage/Priest/Hunter/Whatever and off I go to do that instead of carrying on with my Warrior.

I know I’m not alone in suffering this affliction. Regale us with your tales of altoholism!

  1. I love WoW but since I don’t have the temperament for raiding (too anxious about making mistakes, mostly) I focused on leveling alts. Once I was maxed on characters, I started deleting my 85s to make new ones to level and delete, trying to get my tiny social guild the Classy achievements. Most recent count was 11 85s, 4 deleted 85s, 6 more characters over level 80.

Being too poor to keep up the subscription has finally put an end to that particular brand of insanity though. Back to Minecraft where I can’t decide which of my worlds to play!

  2. By the way, guys, just so we’re all clear: Mister Adequate is to warriors what I am to hunters. In other words, it’s all he rolls.

Okay, okay, yes, I, too, follow the clarion call of alts far too many times. By the end of my WoW playing career, alts were all I was playing, and even now when I occasionally feel the urge to start up WoW again it’s specifically so I can dink around on alts. I like being weird.

  3. I have never completed oblivion – I keep having new idea’s for characters and rolling up new ones.

I delete max level WoW characters so I can level new ones (meh, i can’t be bothered with all that raiding malarky – much prefer levelling – people are so nice in levelling dungeons). When cataclysm was released i deleted 8 out of my 10 characters. Including 3 lvl 80’s and 1 lvl 79. Just so I could fill my account with lovely puppies (sorry, worgen)

I’m always rolling up new Diablo II characters. I’ve only managed to finish the game once.

so Mr A, you are most definitely not alone – My Name is Barryhn (for the purposes of this post at least ;) ) and I am an Altoholic.

    1. I could have written your comment, word for word, and it would have been pretty much completely true.

  4. I’ve been playing WoW on and off since…when was it…2006?

I have a grand total of 1 lvl 85 character. The rest are….alts. A LOT of them. Around a dozen. I have never deleted a character over level 1.

    That is all.

    lolz

  5. I’m with Elitists Anonymous. Hello, my name is Armond and you have a problem.

In seriousness, though, I have been tempted more than once to re-subscribe to Aion simply to dink around on the character creation screen. I’m not huge on making or playing new characters, but there’s something about a well-made character creation system in a game with good graphics that really, really appeals, even if I never even put a name to the face.

  6. Turalyon-10 characters (one of each class, 9 of them trolls)
Drenden-10 characters (one of each class, each a different ally race)
    Arygos-3 characters

    I loves me some alts.

  7. I have alt-zheimers hardcore in WoW.
On Blackwater Raiders (RP nerd alert) I’ve got… 3 85s, 4 characters in their 70s, 2 characters in their 60s, and one little Warlock who is almost 50.
I used to be big on PvP in BC and big on raiding in WotLK. Now that the Cataclysm has struck, I log in to queue in the Dungeon Finder with a friend or two on whichever alt has earned my favor, and maybe do a little questing on the side.
I don’t do dailies, do a heroic maybe… once a week, don’t raid, and BG a little on my healing classes. I log in to socialize with my friends and level characters to their cap. RP is very fun as well, but it’s mostly only with my friends; everyone with even a smidgen of interest in RP moved to Moon Guard or Wyrmrest Accord. Nevertheless, I feel I get the most out of my subscription fee just dinking around on alts.
